According to the latest figures from Research2Guidance, there are over 260,000 healthcare applications available in the market. To make your healthcare app stand out in this number and resonate with the target audience, it should not only provide engagement and customer satisfaction but also sustainability.

Healthcare systems are becoming very active in forging a partnership with developers, however, they’re often jumping into the sandbox without a good grasp of mobile health application design considerations. Said Jeffery Kendall, Senior VP and GM for enterprise mobile app designer Kony’s Americas bureau.

With increasing pressure on the healthcare industry to flex & evolve, as designers, it’s our duty to provide healthcare professionals, users and patients — ease, information and resources they need. Now more than ever is the greatest opportunity to make a change with the design applications.

UI and UX design strategies have become a cornerstone for the success of any application, healthcare being no exception. Let’s have a look at some efficient healthcare application development techniques from a design perspective.

1. Identify the problem

“The key to successful mobile health application design lies in knowing how and why users will want to use the app,” says Dr Michelle Longmire, CEO and co-founder of mHealth app design company Medable.

Defining the problem that you aim to solve is the first and most important step in designing an application interface.

While being a part of healthcare application development process, you should always keep in mind, Does it serve the purpose?

Mimicking other application designs and not resolving the problem would result in a complete waste of time and effort. For example if a patient's medical information is to be accessed then the application design should be mobile optimised, or the data should be specific to the user on the go, else the entire purpose would land in the bin.

2. User-Friendly Design

An important step in the UX design of healthcare apps is to practice simplicity. As goes the old adage, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”, the industry where user-friendliness is non-negotiable is healthcare.

There are chances when the user may be visually or physically impaired.

Before designing the UI of healthcare apps you should always ask yourself — is it easy to use? Is it accessible?

Choosing colours that creates a sharp contrast can aid the visually impaired users. Avoiding shades of blue-green, red-green and blue-grey etc, can help them experience the application to its fullest.

Implementing voice user interface along with a graphical user interface shall prove to be convenient and provide a smooth customer journey.

When the question is, Does your design send the right message?

The answer to this question is a perfectly chosen colour scheme for the interface.

According to a study from 99designs, blue is overwhelmingly the most popular colour used in healthcare design. The blue colour is often related to a clear sky or a calm ocean. To give the emotion of calm and peace in the Interface blue is always the first choice.

“Well-selected colour schemes help patients get a general image of your medical institution or service right away.” According to EGO Creative innovations

3. Test, Test and Test

Robert Lacis, senior director of customer services at Apperian, says customer feedback and analytics are important in planning for sustainability.

Mapping different ways and applications can be used and tested is a vital thing in the design development process. When confused between choosing an option the best way is to spread it out, test the results and make repeated iterations until a positive response is received. Further auditing and developing the data collected at the back end will provide for the dos and don’ts of healthcare application designing.

The bottom line

When designing healthcare apps you need to think beyond the look and feel of the app.

Most of the time users accessing the apps would be either patients looking for quick and easy solutions or medical practitioners trying to access the patient’s details.

An effective healthcare application development process requires a focus on what works best for the audience. So your design should adhere to these fundamental principles.
